Ron Anderson and
Tim Lyle had double-doubles as JMU snapped a six-game losing streak with a 76-65 victory over American.
Anderson had JMU career highs of 16 points and 15 rebounds in 34 minutes. The North Carolina State transfer also had four steals, two assists and two blocked shots. His previous JMU scoring and rebounding highs both were six.
Lyle had 20 points and 11 rebounds in his second double-double of the season. He hit on six of nine shots, including two three-point field goals, and played 39 minutes.
JMU trailed only once – 8-7 less than four minutes into the game – and won for the first time since Dec. 16 despite playing most of the game with a rotation of six players. The Dukes were without injured starters
Mickey Dennis (foot fracture) and
David Fanning (foot sprain) and reserves
Jerian Younger (hamstring injury) and
Ian Caskill (illness), and starter
Pat Mitchell played only 13 minutes because of illness. Dennis missed his fifth straight game, Fanning his third straight and Younger his second straight.
JMU, which led 34-30 at halftime after twice leading by nine points during the first half, opened the second period with an 8-0 scoring run and had at least an eight-point edge the rest of the way.
Charlie Hatter had two field goals and Lyle and
Chris Williams one each as JMU took a 42-30 edge with 17:20 left.
The Dukes led 58-43 with 9:04 left, and American wasn't as close as eight again until pulling to within 71-63 with 35 seconds to play. JMU then hit on five of six free throws to seal the win. Lyle hit on two attempts with 34 seconds left and Anderson on two with 15 seconds left.
JMU shot 47.4 percent (27-57) overall and 40.0 percent (6-15) from three-point range. The Dukes also had a 40-32 rebounding edge. American shot 39.0 percent (23-59) overall and 30.8 percent from three-point range.
Dwayne Braxton, who had 16 points, four rebounds and five assists, was JMU's third double-figure scorer.
Ronald Hearns led American with 20 points, and Patrick Doctor had 15 points and seven rebounds. Hearns hit for six three-point field goals in 14 attempts.
