GREENVILLE, N.C. (2/5/2001) –
Ron Anderson scored a career-high 22 points and JMU dominated the final 18 minutes to roll to a 69-51 victory at East Carolina.
Anderson hit on 10 of 13 shots and also had seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots and steals.
David Fanning added 19 points and
Tim Lyle 17 points and nine rebounds for the Dukes, who posted their largest margin of victory in Colonial Athletic Association play since the 1996-97 season.
JMU shot 45.6 percent (26-57) and held East Carolina to 32.2 percent shooting (19-59). The Dukes also shot a season-high 41.2 percent (7-17) from three-point range and had a 43-31 rebounding advantage, including 26-14 during the second half.
After JMU had a nine-point lead just more than three minutes into the game and a 35-23 advantage at halftime, East Carolina got to within 39-33 less than two minutes into the final half before the Dukes regained control. Fanning's three-point play with 17:58 left ended East Carolina's 10-4 surge to open the second half and started an 8-0 JMU run. The Dukes led 47-33 with 14:07 remaining on Fanning's jumper, 54-37 with 9:50 to play and 69-46 with 1:20 left.
Anderson and Lyle each had 12 first-half points for JMU, and Fanning and Anderson each had 10 second-half points.
JMU began the game with an 11-2 scoring run and led 19-8 with 13:06 left during the first half behind 10 points by Lyle and nine by Anderson. East Carolina tied the score at 19-19 at 5:27, but Fanning had nine points as the Dukes closed the half with a 16-4 scoring run after going scoreless for eight minutes.
Lyle hit on six of 10 shots, including three of five three-point tries, and Fanning had two three-pointers, four rebounds and five assists.
JMU last had beaten a league foe by as many as 18 points when it downed American 78-60 at home Feb. 8, 1999.
The loss was only East Carolina's second in 11 home games in 2000-01.
JMU's win was its eighth straight at East Carolina and its 11th win during its last 12 games there.
