HARRISONBURG, Va., Jan. 16, 2005 –- Sophomore Lesley Dickinson's (Queens Village, N.Y./Christ the King) 15 foot baseline jumper with 15.5 seconds left propelled James Madison to a 50-48 victory over Drexel in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the JMU Convocation Center.
JMU snapped a three-game losing streak and improved its record to 9-5 overall and 2-3 in the CAA, while Drexel's record fell to 8-5 and 2-2 in the CAA.
The loss ended a three-game Drexel winning streak.
The Dukes were ahead 26-21 at the half, overcoming an early 10-4 deficit. JMU made a 10-2 run to tie the game 14-14 with 6:46 left in the half.
After arriving at an 18-18 tie with 4:10 left, JMU outscored the Dragons 8-3 to close the half at 26-21. Sophomore Meredith Alexis (Hanover Township, Pa./Bishop Hoban) scored six of those eight points.
JMU led for the entire second half and was ahead by 10 points (44-34) with eight minutes left in the game.
Drexel then outscored the Dukes 9-2 to narrow the lead to 46-43 with 2:21 left. Junior Catherine Scanlon (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) started the run with back to back baskets and scored five of the nine points. Sophomore Kira Karlstrom (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston) twice hit both ends of 1+1 foul shots during the run.
With JMU still ahead by three (48-45), Scanlon hit a three-foot jumper in the lane with 59 seconds remaining to close to 48-47. Following a JMU miss, Drexel freshman Nicole Hester (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) got the rebound and was fouled with 37.2 seconds left. She made both foul shots, but the second was disallowed after a Drexel player stepped in the lane too early. That left the game tied at 48, setting the stage for Dickinson's game-winner.
Alexis, Dickinson, and freshman Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) led JMU with 11 points each. Alexis had a game- and season high 15 rebounds for her fourth consecutive double-double and her sixth of the season.
Drexel's leading scorer on Sunday was Scanlon with 13 points. The Dukes held the CAA's leading scorer, Drexel senior Katrina Martin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) to five points. Martin, who entered the game averaging 17.5 points, was one-for-seven from the floor.
