HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 2, 2005 —James Madison shut out George Mason 3-0 Sunday afternoon in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer at the JMU Soccer Complex.
The game was scoreless for the first 58 minutes until JMU junior Tomiwa Ogunsula (Woodbridge Va.) netted the game-winner. He scored on a 16-yard turn-around shot to the far post that flew past the diving arms of GMU freshman goalkeeper Eric Barnes (Aiken, S.C./South Aiken).
Freshman Kyle Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/Lincoln) added an insurance goal in the 72nd minute when he scored on breakaway from 18 yards out.
Just two and a half minutes later, red-shirt junior Mike Tuddenham (Cincinnati, Ohio/Indian Hill) added another goal for the Dukes, when he scored from 13 yards out off a crossing pass from red-shirt junior Mike Raskys (Colchester, Conn./Bacon Academy). Sophomore Tristan Murray (Brampton, Ontario/St. Marguerite d'Youville) got the ball off a corner kick and passed it to Raskys, who then crossed the ball to Tuddenham for the shot. The goal was Tuddenham's third of the season, a team high.
The game was very physical with four yellow cards given to George Mason and two to JMU. GMU had to play one man down for much of the second half after senior defender Anthony Noreiga (San Fernando, Trinidad/Univ. of Mobile) was given a red card in the 62nd minute.
Red-shirt junior goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) got the start at goalkeeper for the Dukes. He finished the game with three saves and recorded his 16th career shutout.Â
Trapp made a dramatic save in the 83rd minute to preserve the shutout. George Mason senior Kephern Fuller (Marietta, Ga./Wheeler) hit a hard shot from just outside the penalty box. The shot hit another Mason player which re-directed the ball toward the corner of the goal. Trapp's diving save stopped the Patriots' scoring chance. The win raised the JMU's record to 5-3-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the CAA and dropped George Mason to 4-4-1 overall and 0-1-1 in the league.
Next up, JMU travels to Atlanta to take on Georgia State in a CAA conference game on Oct. 7. (5 p.m.)
