HARRISONBURG, Va., Oct. 30, 2005 — Freshman Esteban Maldonado (Alexandria, Va./Edison) scored in overtime to give 22nd-ranked (Soccer America) James Madison a 2-1 victory over Northeastern in Colonial Athletic Association men's soccer at the JMU Soccer Complex Sunday afternoon.
Four minutes into overtime, a foul was called on Northeastern, giving JMU a free kick. Junior Kurt Morsink (San Jose, Costa Rica/IMG) took the kick and crossed it into the penalty box to senior Danny Sheridan (Washington, D.C./Gonzaga). Sheridan flicked the ball off his head to Malonado, who shot the ball just inside the far post from 15 yards out.
The goal was the first of Maldonado's college career. Morsink and Sheridan were credited with assists.
JMU scored first to take an early lead. Only a minute and a half into the first half, freshman Nick Zimmerman (Tampa Bay, Fla./Wharton) took a cross from junior Mark Totten (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) and kicked a shot into the top corner of the goal. The score was Zimmerman's second of the season. It would prove to be the only score of the first half.
Play went back and forth in the second half. With 17:30 left in regulation, Hofstra senior Jay Betley (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) kicked a 16-yard shot that slid by JMU red-shirt junior goalkeeper Kevin Trapp (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park) just inside the far post. The goal tied game at 1-1 and sent it into overtime.
The Dukes out-shot Northeastern 16-2 in the game. Northeastern senior goalkeeper Sergio Saccoccio (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem) made seven saves and Trapp had one save.
The win improved JMU's record to 10-5-2 and 6-3-1 in conference. Northeastern fell to 3-8-6 overall and 2-3-5 in conference.
JMU completes regular-season play Saturday (Nov. 5) at home vs. Virginia Commonwealth, while Northeastern travels to Hofstra on Friday (Nov. 4) for its final regular-season game.
