Seniors Jennifer Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King) and Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) each had double-doubles to lead JamesMadison to a 63-46 win at George Mason in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball play Thursday evening at the Patriot Center.
The Dukes are now 3-1 in league play and 10-5 overall.Mason has a 1-2 CAA record and a 7-8 overall mark.
Young finished with game-highs of 19 points, 11 rebounds and six steals, while Brown contributed a season-high 18 points and 10 rebounds.They were the only two Dukes in double figures.
After a closely contested opening 12 minutes of play, Mason led 19-18 with 8:03 on the clock.
Then JMU outscored the Patriots 12-2 in just under seven minutes.That put JMU up 30-21 with 2:57 remaining, and the Dukes held a 30-22 halftime lead.
Brown, who scored 13 first-half points, had six of the Dukes' points and Young scored four in the go-ahead run.
JMU used a 15-2 scoring run early in the second half to pull away to a 21-point lead, 49-28, with 13:12 remaining.Six JMU players scored in the run, led by Brown with four.
Mason got within 14, but no closer, in late stages of the game (60-46 at 2:16).
Young's double-double was the 32nd of her career, and she added to her school-record streak of consecutive double-figure games, which now stands at 30.She increased her career totals to 1,733 points and 920 rebounds.
Young's six steals tied her career high, and she moved into third place on JMU's all-time steals list with 239.She passed Floretta Jackson (1983-87), who had 235 career steals.
Mason's leading scorer was Brittany Eley with 14.Moni Akuntunde scored 10.
JMU out-rebounded Mason 46-30.The Dukes shot nearly 44 percent (23-53) from the floor, while the Patriots hit only 32 percent (17-54) of their field-goal attempts. The Dukes' starting point guard, Dawn Evans, did not play due to an injury.She is out for an indefinite period.
