RICHMOND, Va., Feb. 28, 2008 -? Virginia Commonwealth took an early lead and withstood a late James Madison rally en route to a 62-56 win in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Thursday evening at the Siegel Center.
The Rams improved to 21-6 overall and 11-5 in league play. JMU's record is now 19-8 overall and 12-4 in the CAA.
VCU took its first lead at 17:44 and was up by as many as 12, 42-30, with 14:35 left. The Dukes were able to cut the margin to two, 50-48, at 5:18, but could get no closer.
VCU sophomore guard La'Tavia Rorie (Charlotte, N.C./Harding University HS) led all players with 16 points and had a team-high eight rebounds. Senior forward Krystal Vaughn (Baltimore, Md./Lake Clifton-Eastern) scored 13, and sophomore guard Kita Waller (Gainesville, Ga./Gainesville) added 11.
JMU was led by senior guard Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) with 14 points; she also had nine rebounds. Redshirt senior forward Jennifer Brown (Brooklyn, N.Y./Martin Luther King) came off the bench for 11 points and 10 rebounds. Redshirt junior forward Nina Uqdah (Lanham, Md./Riverdale Baptist) also scored 11.
VCU ran off 12 straight points early in the game to take a 12-4 lead with 13:50 remaining. The run included three-pointers by Rorie and junior forward Radoslava Bachvarova (Varna, Bulgaria).
JMU got within four on four occasions in the first half, the last time 20-16 at 6:30. Then the Rams connected on three three-pointers in a 11-4 run. A layup by sophomore forward D'Andra Moss (Atlanta, Ga./Norcross)at 2:30 capped the run and gave VCU its biggest lead of the half, 31-20 at 2:30. Rorie hit two of the treys and Waller had one.
The Rams were up 33-24 at halftime and were holding a 43-32 advantage at 13:45. The Dukes scored seven straight points to get the lead down to four, 43-39, at 12:04. Uqdah scored twice on putbacks and converted a foul shot to finish off the JMU run.
VCU pushed its lead back to 48-41 at 9:22. The Dukes, however, outscored VCU 7-2 in a span of 3:04 to pull within two, 50-48, at 5:18. Brown scored the first f
