HARRISONBURG, Va., May 2, 2009 ? Senior right-hander Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) threw five innings of three-hit softball to lead JMU to a 3-1 win over George Mason on Saturday at the JMU Softball Complex.
The Dukes completed the sweep over the Patriots to improve to 32-14 on the season and 12-8 in the Colonial Athletic Association, while dropping GMU to 16-33 overall and 2-18 in the CAA.
Clohan drew the start for Madison on senior day, pitching the first five innings. She allowed three hits and one earned run, walked one and struck out three to pick up the win and improve to 16-8 this season. The senior allowed just the sole run in the third, snapping a streak of 27.1 consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run.
It was Mason that struck first, jumping out to a 1-0 lead after pushing a run across in the top of the third inning. Right fielder Meghan Hill led off the inning with a bunt single before moving to third on a sacrifice bunt and a groundout. Shortstop Rachael Davies gave the Patriots their first lead of the series, singling through the right side to score Hill.
JMU came right back to tie things up on the first pitch of the bottom of the third inning. Junior center fielder Brittney Dyson (Waldorf, Md./Thomas Stone) jumped on right-hander Becky Anderson's first offering, hammering it deep over the fence in left center. It was the junior's first home run of the season and ninth of her career.
Madison broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to take a 3-1 lead. Senior second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) reached on an error to lead off the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Dyson. Junior first baseman Shannon Moxey (Church Road, Va./Mills Godwin) singled to center field to give the Dukes the lead. Moxey was lifted for senior pinch runner Megan Forbes (Fincastle, Va./Lord Botetourt), who moved to third on a single by junior right fielder Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run). With runners on the corners and one out, Simons stole second, drawing a throw from catcher Kara Weiner and allowing Forbes to steal home.
