NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Senior midfielder Jonathan Barden (Harrow, England/Park) scored in the 89th minute Sunday afternoon to lead the James Madison men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Lipscomb at Rose Park in the Belmont Invitational.
Barden, tallying his first goal of the season, scored a beautiful goal that saw him spin in the box and send a shot past Lipscomb goalkeeper Micah Bledsoe.
The goal is his third career goal at JMU and first in more than one year. Barden's last goal came one year and three days ago in a 6-1 victory over VMI on Sept. 11, 2013.
JMU (3-2-1) is now 3-0-1 in its last four games after dropping its first two contests of the 2014 season to Vermont and Albany in the Fairfield Inn by Marriott JMU Invitational on August 29 and August 31.
For the second game in a row, the Dukes were outshot by its opposition but came away with the victory. On Sunday afternoon, JMU was outshot by Lipscomb 13-8 after being outshot 10-4 Friday night by Belmont. Against Lipscomb, the Dukes put just three of their shots on target while the Bisons put six shots on goal.
Redshirt-sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Morton (West Chester, Pa./Reed Henderson) made a season-high six saves on the way to tallying his second shutout of the year and fourth of his career. Morton and the JMU defense have given up just two goals through the last four games after giving up five in the first two games of season.
For his efforts, Morton was named to the Belmont Invitational All-Tournament team. Barden, senior forward Josh Grant (Plymouth, England/Torpoint College) and junior defender Bjarki Aðalsteinsson (Kópavogur, Iceland/Menntaskólinn í Kópavogi) were also named to the All-Tournament team. Thanks to a solid defensive effort through the two matches, Aðalsteinsson was named the tournament MVP.
In the most recent NSCAA Coaches Poll, Lipscomb (4-1) received votes for the first time in program history after going 3-0 to open the season. The Bisons earned a fourth-straight victory to open the year Friday night against Gardner-Webb in the Belmont Invitational before dropping its first match of the season to JMU.
Madison returns to action Friday night, Sept. 19, at University Park with a 7:30 p.m. match against Robert Morris. The match is the second leg of a JMU soccer doubleheader, as the women's team takes on Appalachian State prior to the men's game at 5 p.m.
