MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. – Junior forward
Joe Vyner's second goal of the season pushed James Madison men's soccer to their fourth win in a row, a 2-1 victory over Robert Morris at the North Athletic Complex on Tuesday afternoon. This is JMU's first four-game win streak since Oct. 15-26, 2011.
The Dukes finished the regular season with a 5-9-3 record, winning five of their last six games. It was JMU's third comeback win of the season. The Colonials fell to 4-10-2 on the year.
With the game tied 1-1 in the 68th minute, Vyner slid with a defender on his shoulder to redirect a low cross from redshirt sophomore forward
Billy Metzler into the net, marking the team-high sixth assist of the season from Metzler.
Robert Morris took the initial lead in the 40th minute when Keane McIvor converted a penalty kick.
Redshirt junior defender
Toby Appleton evened the score at 1-1 right before halftime, converting his second penalty kick goal of the year. The penalty was drawn by Metzler after he was dragged down in the box.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Kyle Morton made three saves in the win, the biggest coming in the 76th minute. RMU's Bayley Winkel had a one-on-one opportunity in the box, but Morton quickly cut down the angle and made a point-blank save to preserve the 2-1 lead.
CAA SCENARIOS
JMU now awaits other Colonial Athletic Association matches to decide its fate in the CAA Championship. Elon plays UNCW and Drexel plays College of Charleston at 7 p.m. An Elon win or a College of Charleston draw or loss secures JMU's berth in the tournament.
QUOTING COACH FOLEY
"Just like what we've been doing for the past two weeks, this game was a great team effort with everybody contributing. This game was more about guts and courage than who could play the more beautiful soccer. Give credit to
Billy Metzler, he's playing at a really high level right now and then
Joe Vyner made a great run into the box to finish off the goal."
LUCKY NUMBER 2
In all five wins this season, JMU has scored two goals. The Dukes are 5-1-0 when scoring two goals and 0-8-3 when scoring any other amount. Three of those wins have been 2-1 decisions, while two have been 2-0.
