CHARLOTTE, N.C. - James Madison took a lead into halftime for the second game in a row on Wednesday night, but Charlotte outscored the Dukes, 36-21, in the second half to hand JMU a 65-56 non-conference men's basketball loss at Halton Arena.
The Dukes (0-7) contained the high-powered Charlotte (5-2) offense, which entered the contest averaging 86.2 points per game, but shot just 33.9 percent (19-of-56) from the floor in the loss.
Senior forward
Yohanny Dalembert controlled the paint for the majority of his time on the floor, going 6-of-8 from the field en route to a 12-point, five-rebound, four block performance in just 19 minutes.
Junior guard
Joey McLean added 11 points and three assists, including a 7-of-7 night from the free throw line, while senior guard
Shakir Brown tallied nine points and a game-high nine rebounds.
The Dukes stormed out to a 35-29 halftime lead that saw them turn a 23-18 deficit at the 8:03 mark into a 35-25 lead with 2:33 to play before the break, a 17-2 run across 5:30. However, Charlotte erased the gap early in the second half, going on an 8-0 run to tie things at 37-37 at the 14:01 mark, then using a 10-0 run to take a 49-43 lead with 9:53 to play that the Dukes would not bounce back from.
Sophomore Jon Davis, Charlotte's leading scorer with 20.3 points per game entering the contest, paced the 49ers again with 22 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including a 4-of-7 clip behind the arc. Sophomore Andrien White added 13 points and eight rebounds of his own.
QUOTING COACH ROWE
"We didn't play well with a lead tonight. We came out the second half and got anxious and that led to some bad shots on offense. They like to play a fast-paced game and they got us out of our rhythm, but I'm proud of the way we fought tonight."
BATTLE ON THE BOARDS
JMU out-rebounded the 49ers by a 41-32 margin, the largest such margin of the year and the seventh time in as many games the Dukes have won the rebounding battle. Ten of the 11 players that saw the floor for JMU pulled down at least one rebound on the evening.
