HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison fell behind early and could not dig out of a sizable hole on Saturday afternoon, as the Dukes ended their 2021-22 season with a 95-59 loss to Towson in men's basketball action at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
The Dukes (15-14, 6-12) struggled from the field, hitting only 20 of 54 shots (37%) and three of their 20 three-pointers (15%), while Towson (23-7, 14-3) hit nine of its first 14 shots, including six of eight three-pointers, and didn't look back, shooting 53.3% for the game and 56% from long range.
Redshirt freshman
Terrence Edwards racked up a career-high 29 on the afternoon, going 11-17 from the field and hitting two of his four three-pointers. The performance cleared his previous collegiate high by 12 points and he added seven rebounds, including four on the offensive glass.
Towson guard Nicolas Timberlake hit seven three-pointers, including three in the opening 4:08, on his way to 25 points to lead the Tigers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Half
Both teams opened well on defense, with Edwards cutting Towson's lead to just 5-4 after 3:18 of gameplay, but the Tigers immediately scored 10 straight points, queued by back-to-back three-pointers from Timberlake.
JMU halted the run with free throws, but would go 9:09 without a field goal, giving up additional runs of 10-0 and 9-0 as Towson stretched its advantage to 37-9 before taking a 45-21 lead into the half.
Second Half
JMU worked to chip away early in the second half, cutting the lead to 53-32, but Towson used additional runs of 11-0 and 15-0 to put the game well out of reach.
QUICK HITS
- With his Saturday performance, Edwards became the fourth JMU player this year to score at least 25 points in a game, joining Morse, Molson and Falden.
- This marks the first season since 2015-16 in which four different players have reached that mark for JMU.
