TROY, Ala. – Troy utilized a 31-point third quarter to propel past James Madison, 87-74, on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena in Sun Belt Conference women's basketball action.
The loss was JMU's (12-5, 4-1 SBC) first in conference play, while the Trojans (7-8, 4-1 SBC) picked up their fifth consecutive win.
Troy saw five players score in double figures, led by Makayia Hallmon with 27 points on 12-of-23 (.522) from the field. Teammates Ja'Mia Hollings (17 points, 14 rebounds) and Zay Dyer (13 points, 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles.

Kseniia Kozlova registered her fifth career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Classmate
Jamia Hazell eclipsed 1,000 career points with 13 to give her 1,010 as a Duke. Hazell and sophomore
Chloe Sterling tied for the team lead with four assists. Redshirt sophomore
Peyton McDaniel hit a trio of three-pointers to finish with 13 points to go along with seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- Olivia Mullins, McDaniel and Hazell all knocked down threes to give the Dukes a 19-8 advantage at the media timeout.
- JMU was held without a made basket for the final 2:30 of the frame but held on for a 21-13 lead at the break.
- Hazell (7) and Kozlova (6) combined for 13 points in the quarter.
Second Quarter
- Troy trailed by five, 33-28, before Mullins connected on a triple to put James Madison up 36-28 halfway through the period.
- The Trojans cut the deficit to two, 37-35, at the half.
- The Dukes did not register a made field goal in the final 3:28 in the period, while Troy didn't make one in the last 2:28 of play.
Third Quarter
- Troy's Tai'sheka Porchia converted on and-one to tie the game at 40 at the 7:24 mark.
- The Trojans went ahead 48-44 at the media timeout with a 6-0 run over 1:18.
- Troy shot 11-of-19 (.579) in the third, including 8-of-8 from the line to take a 66-55 lead with one quarter to play.
- McDaniel scored seven points in the frame, shooting a perfect 3-for-3 from the field.
Fourth Quarter
- Graduate student Carole Miller sank a corner three as the Dukes trailed 66-60 in the opening minutes.
- The Trojans led by as many as 16 (85-69) with 1:57 remaining.
- Troy hit four of its last five field goals to secure the 87-74 win.
GAME NOTES
- JMU and Troy are tied 1-1 in the all-time series.
- Hazell is the 33rd Duke to reach the 1,000-point mark. Dawn Evans (2007-2011) is the program leader in points with 2,667.
- Coming into the game, the Dukes were 26-0 when scoring 70 or more and 9-0 when shooting 40.0 percent or better from three. JMU scored 74 points and went 8-for-19 (.421) from deep.
- The Trojans held an advantage in bench points (29-19), fast break points (25-8) and points off turnovers (17-3).
- Kozlova's double-double was the fifth of her career and third this season.
- James Madison lost the rebounding battle (46-43) for just the second time this season. Michigan State is the only other team to outwork the Dukes on the boards in 2023-24, out-rebounding JMU 50-38 on Nov. 23.
- Troy made 33 field goals – the most by a JMU opponent this season.
- The Dukes led for 21:19.
