HARRISONBURG, Va. – Marshall scored 20 points off of 23 James Madison turnovers to come away with a 77-70 win inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center on Wednesday night in Sun Belt Conference women's basketball action.
JMU (14-6, 6-2 SBC) led by as many as 14 (29-15) at the 3:39 mark of the second quarter but the Thundering Herd (14-5, 8-0 SBC) took control less than a minute into the third (38-37) and never relinquished the lead from 7:17 on.
Senior
Hevynne Bristow paced the Dukes in scoring with 11 points off the bench to go along with eight rebounds. Sophomore
Chloe Sterling finished with 10 points, seven of which came in the fourth quarter. Redshirt sophomore
Peyton McDaniel shot a perfect 3-for-3 for nine points in just 8:46 of game action, while
Ashanti Barnes registered a Division I career-high 11 rebounds.
Marshall's Aislynn Hayes led all players with 21 points on 7-13 (.538) from the field, while Breanna Campbell added 19 points and seven assists. Sydney Scott registered 12 points, hitting 4-of-12 (.333) from long range in the win.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- The Dukes jumped out to a 9-2 lead, with Kozlova responsible for six of those points.
- The Herd went 0-for-8 during a 4:09 scoring drought early in the period.
- JMU held Marshall to 3-of-17 (.176) from the field and 2-of-12 (.167) from three to take a 19-8 lead at the break.
- The Thundering Herd was scoreless for the final 2:08.
Second Quarter
- Marshall cut the deficit to six (21-15) before McDaniel connected on a three from the wing to make it 24-15 at the media timeout.
- The Dukes' advantage grew to 29-15 with another triple by McDaniel halfway through the frame.
- The Herd bounced back with an 11-2 run to close out the half, with JMU on top 37-33.
Third Quarter
- Marshall started the third quarter on a 6-0 run for a 37-39 lead in the opening minutes.
- The Thundering Herd's cushion grew to six (51-45) at the 3:40 mark.
- James Madison trailed 55-51 with one quarter to go.
- The Dukes' bench recorded nine points in the period.
Fourth Quarter
- The Herd went on a 6-0 run early in the fourth to take a 61-53 lead and force a JMU timeout.
- Marshall's advantage ballooned to 17 (72-55) with 5:21 remaining in the contest as part of a 17-2 run in a 4:18 stretch.
- The Thundering Herd led by as many as 18 (75-57) before the Dukes finished on a 13-2 run to fall 77-70, holding Marshall scoreless for the final 4:00.
GAME NOTES
- JMU leads the all-time series against Marshall, 7-3.
- James Madison held the advantage in bench points (42-10), points in the paint (42-26), second chance points (19-14) and fast break points (11-9).
- The Dukes' 42 bench points are tied for the most against a Division opponent this season, having recorded 42 versus Georgia Southern on Jan. 18.
- JMU has won the rebounding battle for the 18th time in 20 games this season, outworking Marshall on the glass 46-35.
- Sterling tied her career-high of 10 points, accomplishing the feat for the third time this season.
- Redshirt junior Amira Williams tied her season-high in rebounds with six. Earlier this season, Williams pulled down six at Longwood on Nov. 15.
- Marshall went 5-for-14 (.364) from the free throw line -- the worst performance from the charity stripe by a JMU opponent since Hofstra shot 3-of-9 (.333) on Jan. 11.
- The Herd's 43 three-point attempts are tied for the most by a JMU opponent in program history.
- JMU's 23 turnovers were a season-high and the most for the team since committing 24 at Elon on Jan. 17, 2021.
