HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – James Madison women's basketball shot a season-best 58.2 percent (32-of-55) from the field and poured in 56 points in the paint to top Marshall, 72-63, on Saturday afternoon inside the Cam Henderson Center.
JMU (16-7, 8-3 SBC) out-rebounded the Herd (16-6, 10-1 SBC), 45-34, to help erase Marshall's ten-game win streak and perfect start in Sun Belt Conference play.

Breanna Campbell paced all players with 16 points on 6-of-19 (.316) from the field, followed by Abby Beeman (15), CC Mays (13) and Aislynn Hayes (10). Campbell registered five steals, while Ashley Tudor brought in seven rebounds.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
- James Madison opened with a 4-0 lead, but four turnovers by the Dukes in a 1:09 stretch resulted in a 7-4 advantage for Marshall.
- JMU locked in defensively, holding the Thundering Herd without a made field goal for 3:14 to make it 14-14 after one.
- All 14 of the Dukes' points came in the paint, while Marshall only managed to connect on 1-of-9 (.111) from three.
Second Quarter
- JMU started on an 8-0 run before Hayes knocked down a wing triple to trail 22-17 at the 7:12 mark.
- Hazell found McDaniel under the basket in transition to give the Dukes a 30-22 advantage.
- JMU's cushion grew to 11 (36-25) with 3:06 left in the half.
- James Madison took a 39-30 lead at the break, with 34 points in the paint.
- Marshall shot 10-of-37 (.270) in the first half, compared to 19-of-31 (.613) for the Dukes.
Third Quarter
- Kozlova scored six points early in the third as JMU held a 45-32 advantage.
- The Dukes went 9-of-14 (.643) from the field and finished on a 7-0 run for a 61-44 lead after three.
- Marshall failed to make a three-pointer in the frame, going 0-for-4.
Fourth Quarter
- James Madison had zero points for a 3:32 stretch leading into the media timeout as the Dukes still had control, 67-55.
- JMU scored just 11 points in the fourth on 4-of-10 shooting (.400) and made zero field goals in the final 3:00, but held on for the 72-63 win.
- Bristow scored five points in the frame and grabbed four boards.
- Marshall outscored James Madison 19-11 in the final quarter.
GAME NOTES
- James Madison leads Marshall 8-3 in the all-time series.
- The victory marked the Dukes' first time beating a conference team with a 10-0 or better record since defeating No. 11 Old Dominion 76-63 on March 2, 2008. Coming into the game, the Monarchs were 16-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association and 26-3 overall.
- JMU's 56 points in the paint are the most by the team against a Division I opponent this season. Previously, the Dukes recorded 48 at Maine on Dec. 17.
- The Dukes also held an advantage in bench points (35-17) and fast break points (22-6).
- James Madison won despite making only one three-pointer (1-for-8). It was the first time the program had failed to make more than one triple since going 1-for-25 (.040) at North Carolina on Dec. 5, 2021. Additionally, the effort against the Herd marked Head Coach Sean O'Regan's first win when making one or less from long range.
- JMU's 25 points in the second quarter is the most by the team in any second quarter this season.
- Marshall's 30.1 percent (22-of-73) from the field is its worst shooting percentage this season.
- James Madison led for 33:56.
