HARRISONBURG, Va. – For the first time in program history, James Madison women's basketball concluded the regular season with an 18-0 mark in conference play, pouring in 46 points in the paint in a 79-51 victory over ULM on Senior Day inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center in Sun Belt Conference action.
With the win, the Dukes (27-4, 18-0 SBC) set the program record for regular-season wins, with the previous record being set by the 2014-15 team with a 26-3 mark. JMU achieved its fourth undefeated season against league foes, previously going 12-0 in 1986-87, 1987-88 and 1988-89 as members of the Colonial Athletic Association.
James Madison is also the first Sun Belt team to begin league play 18-0 since Arkansas State started the 2015-16 season 18-0. The Dukes are one of only eight teams in Sun Belt history to go undefeated in conference play since the league expanded to double-digit conference games in 1991-92: Louisiana Tech (1993-94, 1995-96, 1998-99, 1999-00, 2000-01) and Middle Tennessee (2006-07, 2011-12).
Additionally, their 19 consecutive victories are the most under the direction of Head Coach
Sean O'Regan and the most since posting a 20-game winning streak from Jan. 8 through March 12, 2016.
Kseniia Kozlova registered 19 points and 13 rebounds to notch her seventh double-double of the season and 14th of her career.
Ro Scott paced all players in scoring with 21 points, going 8-for-11 (.727) from the field and 3-for-5 (.600) from three with five rebounds and a pair of steals.
Ashanti Barnes recorded a double-double of 11 points and 11 boards and led all players with five assists, while
Peyton McDaniel added 12 points off the bench.
Bree Robinson chipped in with four points and four assists in the win.
Nya Valentine paced the Warhawks with 15 points, going 3-for-6 (.500) from three off the bench. Jakayla Johnson finished with nine points and seven rebounds, while Katlyn Manuel also scored nine points and came away with five boards. Starters Johnson and Meloney Thames were held to a combined 4-of-32 (.125) from the field in the loss.
How It Happened
First Quarter – JMU 21, ULM 10
- Tied 6-6 at the 6:32 mark, the Dukes closed on a 15-4 run to go ahead 21-10 after one.
- The Warhawks were held to 21.4 percent (3-of-14) in the opening frame.
- Scott registered eight points, knocking down 2-of-2 from deep.
Second Quarter – JMU 40, ULM 23
- ULM missed its last eight shots from the field and failed to score for the final 3:53 of the period.
- At the half, JMU had connected on 16-of-30 (.533) from the field and out-scored the Warhawks in the paint, 22-8.
Third Quarter – JMU 58, ULM 32
- The Dukes recorded another efficient quarter, shooting 9-for-18 (.500) while holding ULM to 4-of-14 (.286).
- Kozlova scored six points in the frame, going 3-for-5 (.600) from the field.
Fourth Quarter – JMU 79, ULM 51
- Scott closed with six points and three rebounds in the final frame, while Kozlova posted five points and five rebounds.
- ULM knocked down 4-of-10 (.400) from behind the arc.
Game Notes
- Additionally, JMU's 14 home wins are the most by the program inside the Atlantic Union Bank Center and marks the most home wins for the Dukes since going 14-1 during the 2019-20 season – the last season played inside the Convocation Center.
- The Dukes held an advantage in points in the paint (46-18), bench points (29-17), fast-break points (7-4) and steals (5-2).
- With her 115th career start today, Jamia Hazell now sits 10th all-time in program history, passing Kayla Cooper Williams (2015-2020).
- Two Dukes recorded double-doubles for the first time since Kozlova (19 points, 15 rebounds) and McDaniel (13 rebounds, 11 points) did so against Georgia State on Feb. 19.
- JMU improved to 2-0 in the all-time series against ULM, dating back to 2023. In their history against Sun Belt opponents, the Dukes are also undefeated against Louisiana (5-0), Southern Miss (4-0), South Alabama (3-0) and Texas State (3-0).
- The Dukes have already captured the No. 1 seed heading into the Sun Belt Women's Basketball Championship and will begin tournament play in the semifinals on Sunday, March 9. JMU will face the winner of game nine at 12:30 p.m. ET (11:30 a.m. CT) inside the Pensacola Bay Center.
