HARRISONBURG, Va. - James Madison men's basketball tips off the 2026-27 campaign this Sunday at home taking on the Richmond Spiders in the season's first exhibition. Tip from the Atlantic Union Bank Center is set for 2 p.m., and admission is free.
Entering the third year of the head coach Preston Spradlin era, JMU has boasted an impressive 38-27 overall record since the Kentucky native took over the program prior to the 2024-25 season.
Spradin's inaugural campaign saw the Dukes post a 20-12 overall record, marking the third consecutive season the program reached the 20-win figure. That remarkable start was followed by an 18-15 overall record last year, pushing Spradlin's win total at James Madison to 38, the most a JMU men's basketball head coach has earned through their first two seasons at the helm.
Since taking over, coach Spradlin and staff have had to navigate roster turnover each offseason in the Valley, and the 2026-27 team has continued that trend. The JMU faithful can expect to see 13 new Dukes (10 transfers, three freshmen) competing in the Atlantic Union Bank Center this season.
One transfer making his way to Harrisonburg, Virginia, who fans will come to know this season is third-year guard K.J. Windham. Over the past two seasons, Windham has competed in 43 games and made four starts for Northwestern. The guard wrapped up his career at NU averaging 4.9 points, 1.7 assists, and 1.2 rebounds per game. During this span, Windham reached the double-digit mark eight times and recorded two 20-point performances. Coming out of high school, 247Sports tabbed Windham the second-best player in the state of Indiana and the 18th-best combo guard in the nation.
Another player transferring in from a Power Four program is third-year forward Garrett Sundra. Over the past two seasons, Sundra has competed in 52 games, including 16 starts, for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. In this span, the Ashburn, Virginia, native averaged three points and 2.5 rebounds per game, highlighted by a career-best nine point performance vs. SMU his rookie season (Feb. 19, 2025). Coming out of high school, Sundra was rated the 131st best recruit nationally by 247Sports and was ranked the sixth best recruit in the state of Virginia by ESPN.
Another transfer looking to make a big impact this season for the Dukes is third-year guard Gage Lattimore. Coming from North Carolina Central, Lattimore was one of the most exciting players in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference last season. Starting in 28 games, Lattimore averaged a remarkable 16.6 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.7 assists for the Eagles, resulting in First Team All-MEAC and First Team BOXTOROW HBCU All-American honors. One of his most memorable performances from last season was a 29 point night against JMU (Dec. 3, 2025), which single-handedly kept the Eagles competitive in that matchup. Lattimore opened his career playing one season at Seton Hill, where he played 27 games, averaging 10.6 points per contest as a true freshman.
Of the 15 players on this year's squad, two are returners, Preston Fowler and Paul Jones III. In his first year in college, Fowler competed in all 33 games, including 14 starts. The guard wrapped up his rookie campaign averaging 6.2 points and 4.6 rebounds per game, highlighted by a career-best 20 point and 11 rebound double-double performance against Georgia Southern (Feb. 25). Fowler finished his freshman season recording double-digit points five times. On the other hand, Jones played in 20 games last year, averaging 2.8 points per contest during his sophomore campaign. Prior to becoming a Duke, Jones spent his freshman year at Winthrop. There he earned Big South All-Freshman honors after averaging 7.6 points and three rebounds through his 32 appearances.
