History of Eagle Field
James Madison University baseball resides at the Veterans Memorial Park complex, located adjacent to Memorial Hall at the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and South High Street (Rt. 42). The complex, which opened in March of 2010, holds separate venues for both baseball and softball with a seating capacity of 1,200 for baseball. Both venues feature a top-of-the-line playing surface, comfortable spectator seating, enclosed press boxes with separated broadcast rooms, restrooms, a merchandise area and concessions.
Prior to the 2020 season, JMU installed a new FieldTurf synthetic turf system at Eagle Field, replacing the original turf from 2010. Carolina Green Corp. installed the new DoublePlay Natural baseball system, developed using a scientific approach to analyze ball-surface interaction never before used in the industry Through the use of advanced high-tech motion video cameras, FieldTurf was able to translate over 300 videos and 70,000 photos into real-life data. The result was an artificial turf surface that plays the most like a natural baseball field to be found in the industry.
A monument at the entrance to the facility was dedicated on Veterans Day weekend during the fall of 2009 and honors all Harrisonburg and Rockingham County residents who were casualties of war.
Memorial Hall houses offices for both programs as well as locker rooms, team rooms, weight rooms, a sports medicine area, batting cages and additional indoor practice space. The original indoor space was completed in 2009 with additional upgrades in 2016 with a netting system and new turf to allow for an entirely turf surface the size of an entire softball infield or up to eight batting cages. Indoor lighting was upgraded to LED in the summer of 2017. The weight room equipment was swapped in 2022 and the front lobby entrance area also upgraded.
In addition to the original FieldTurf installation at baseball, the surface was converted to 100 percent turf in 2016 with the pitching mound and batter's box areas switched from dirt to turf. The outdoor bullpen and batting cages were resurfaced in 2016 and cage netting systems replaced in 2018. Outfield padding was installed in 2018 and the original scoreboard replaced in 2019. A Right View Pro video system was also installed to accommodate training and analysis opportunities of student-athlete performance, and official replay capabilities were added for the 2023 season to comply with Sun Belt replay standards. In March 2018, JMU also installed outfield wall padding and the batter's eye was replaced.
