Eupton C. Jackson was a key performer on several of JMU's top defenses. Playing from 1987-90, he was a four-year safety starter, and JMU was among the nation's top-20 Division I-AA defenses during each of his years. He had 362 career tackles, still JMU's No. 7 overall mark and the program's best figure for a defensive back. He led JMU's defensive backs in tackles for four straight seasons and was the squad's overall tackles leader as a junior and senior.
JMU in 1987 made its first NCAA playoff appearance while posting a 9-3 record. He was JMU's 1990 captain and that season's Virginia Division I defensive player of the year by the Roanoke Times. He was named to an all-state first team during each of his final three seasons and in 1990 was named to four All-America first teams. His nine career interceptions still rank him in a tie for seventh place among all JMU players.
He took part in 81 tackles in 1987, 93 in 1988, 96 in 1989 and 92 1990, and JMU allowed an average of fewer than 300 yards per game during each of those seasons.
