A three-time All-American in cross country and track & field, Coleman was a member of the 1998 NCAA Regional Cross Country Championship team as well as the ninth-place Dukes at the NCAA Championships. For his efforts throughout the 1998 cross country season, Coleman earned All-American honors. He was also a two-time NCAA qualifier for indoor track and field in the distance medley relay, where he picked up All-American honors in both 1998 and 1999. He was also the 2000 indoor IC4A champion in the 3,000 meters. He ranks first all-time for JMU in the outdoor 5,000 meters, fourth in 1,500 meters, fourth in 4x800 meter relay, fourth and sixth in 4x1500-meter relay, and second and sixth in distance medley relay. On the indoor track all-time list, Coleman ranks fourth in the 1,000 meters and 3,000 meters, seventh in 5,000 meters and eighth in indoor mile. He is also a part of the No. 7 indoor 4x800 meter relay team and second, third, fourth and fifth ranked indoor distance medley relay teams in school history. Individually, he was also fourth in 1995 U.S. Junior Nationals in cross country and qualified for 1996 World Junior Cross Country Championships.
