Sherman Dillard ('78) was a standout member of JMU's men's basketball team during the Dukes' transition from the Division II level to Division I. He was the program's first 2,000-point scorer and finished his career with 2,065 points and a 20.7 points-per-game scoring average. Dillard was JMU's most valuable player in 1973-74 and 1974-75 as a freshman and sophomore, and he was the team's offensive most valuable in 1977-78 after missing the previous season because of a foot injury. He earned honorable mention All-America honors four times and Academic All-America recognition three times while helping the Dukes to a 75-29 record in his four seasons. Dillard was named the head basketball coach at Indiana State University in the spring of 1994 after previously working as an assistant coach at Maryland, California and Georgia Tech.
