NORFOLK, Va. (1/3/2001) – Pierre Greene scored six of his game-high 19 points as Old Dominion closed the first half with a 12-0 scoring burst, and the host Monarchs went on to beat JMU 80-63.
Old Dominion led only 25-24 before holding JMU scoreless for the final 5:31 of the first half. The Monarchs then got a three-point field goal on the opening possession of the second half to raise their lead to 40-24 and were comfortably ahead the remainder of the game.
Greene, who hit on eight of 12 shots, started Old Dominion's 12-0 first-half scoring run with a field goal at the 5:12 mark, and he scored the final four points of the half on a jumper with 29 seconds remaining and a fast-break dunk at the final first-half horn.
Neither team led by more than three points, and there were four ties and 10 lead changes before Old Dominion pulled away late during the first half. After falling behind by 16 points during the first minute of the final half, JMU got as close as 42-33 with 16:31 remaining but Old Dominion raised the margin to 54-37 with 12:20 left. The Monarchs' largest lead was 78-53 with 1:08 to play.
Old Dominion dominated the rebounding 41-24 and had 19 offensive rebounds. JMU shot 52.9 percent (27-51), but the Monarchs hit on 26 of 27 free throws to go along with 42.1 percent shooting (24-57) from the field.
Rasheed Wright with 15 points joined Greene in double figures in scoring for Old Dominion, and the Monarchs got seven points and 15 rebounds from Clifton Jones.
Pat Mitchell led three Dukes in double figures in scoring with 15 points and had a team-high five rebounds.
Tim Lyle added 12 points and
Dwayne Braxton 11 for JMU.
JMU played without guards
Mickey Dennis and
David Fanning and lost forward
Jerian Younger to a hamstring injury during the second half. Dennis missed his third straight game with a foot injury, and Fanning didn't play after suffering a foot injury Dec. 30 against East Tennessee State.
