RICHMOND, Va. (1/6/2001) – Rick Houston had six of Richmond's team-record 15 three-point field goals to lead the host Spiders to a 68-39 victory over JMU.
Houston scored 15 straight Richmond points on three-pointers during the second half and finished with 18 points, tying for game-high scoring honors. He hit on six of seven three-point attempts overall.
The Spiders attempted a JMU-opponent-record 34 three-point shots and had a 44.1 percent shooting mark from three-point range. They hit on six of 21 three-point tries during the first half and on nine of 13 tries during the second half.
Richmond took a 29-14 halftime lead despite missing on its first nine shots, and the Spiders finished with a 39.3 percent (24-61) shooting mark. JMU shot a season-low 30.4 percent (14-46).
The Dukes got to within 37-26 by outscoring Richmond 12-9 during the opening 4:24 of the second half, but JMU had only two points during the next seven minutes and trailed 49-28 midway through the period.
Houston's second-half three-point barrage began after JMU pulled to within 37-26. He hit on long-ranged jumpers at the 15:03, 12:05, 10:52, 10:11, and 7:50 marks to give Richmond a 52-30 edge. JMU got to within 54-37 with 4:50 to play but was outscored 14-2 the rest of the way.
Richmond's Reggie Brown tied Houston for game scoring honors with 18 points, and Greg Stevenson had 17 points and 13 rebounds for the Spiders.
Pat Mitchell led JMU with 13 points and was the only Duke in double figures in scoring.
Tim Lyle had 10 rebounds for JMU.
JMU had a 39-34 rebounding advantage but committed 16 turnovers to only five by Richmond. The Dukes had 11 first-half turnovers.
The only game in which a JMU opponent had had more than 15 three-point field goal was in a 92-88 loss at Old Dominion in 1992-93.
