DUKES FALL 66-55 AT DELAWARE IN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
NEWARK, Del., Jan. 30, 2005 –- League-leading Delaware weathered a late James Madison comeback and posted a 66-55 victory in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Sunday afternoon at the Bob Carpenter Center. Delaware remained unbeaten (9-0) in conference play and improved to 16-2 overall with its 14th consecutive win. The Dukes are 11-7 overall and 4-5 in the CAA. Leading by four (39-35) at 13:49, the Blue Hens outscored JMU 13-2 over a span of 7:21 to go up by 15 (52-37) with 6:05 remaining. Delaware scored six of those points following JMU turnovers. But over a three-minute period the Dukes scored 13 points while holding Delaware to a single point. That trimmed the lead to three, 53-50, with 2:43 to play. During the run sophomore Lesley Dickinson (Queens Village, N.Y./Christ the King) scored six points, freshman Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney) added four and sophomore Andrea Benvenuto (Ancaster, Ontario/St. Mary's) hit a three-pointer. However, Delaware outscored JMU 13-5 in the final 2:25. Nine of those points came at the foul line, where the Blue Hens were eight-of-nine. Sophomore Liz Hayes (Easton, Pa./Easton) scored all six of her points in the last 1:17, when she connected on all six of her free throw tries. JMU scored the game's first basket but did not lead again. In a span of 6:41 in the first half the Blue Hens outscored the Dukes 12-5 and were eight-for-eight at the foul line. That gave Delaware a 10-point (30-20) lead with 1:10 to play. Ten of the Blue Hens' final 12 points of the half came from free throws. The Dukes made only 29.7 percent (19-64) of their field goals, their second-lowest accuracy of the year, and committed 21 turnovers. Delaware shot 34.7 percent (17-49) from the field and hit 29 of 38 free throw attempts. Delaware preseason CAA Player of the Year Tiara Malcom (Wilmington, Del./Caravel Academy) led all players with 25 points. The senior forward was 11-for-12 at the foul line and also had a team-high seven rebounds.
