PHILADELPHIA, Pa., Feb. 3, 2005 –- Drexel senior Katrina Martin (Bowie, Md./Elizabeth Seton) scored 23 points to lead the Dragons (6-3, 12-6) to a 63-52 win over James Madison in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball Thursday evening at the Daskalakis Center.
Drexel led by six (32-26) at halftime and ran off 12 straight points midway through the second half to go ahead by 15, 49-34, at 11:20. JMU responded by outscoring the Dragons 16-6 in a span of 8:40 to trim the lead to five, 55-50, with 1:45 to play.
Forced to foul in the final minutes, the Dukes were outscored 8-2 the rest of the way, with all eight of Drexel's points coming on free throws. The Dragons connected on eight of 11 foul shots in the final 1:20.
Drexel led by six points early (14-8 at 12:50), but the Dukes went on a 12-4 scoring run to take their only lead of the game, 20-18, at 6:49. The Dragons then scored the game's next six points to go up 24-20 at 4:33. An 8-4 run to close the half put Drexel ahead by six at the break.
JMU outscored Drexel 38-36 from the field, but the Dragons outscored the Dukes 27-14 at the foul line. Drexel hit 27 of 33 free-throw tries while JMU was 14-for-18 from the foul line.Â
Martin was joined in double figures by junior Catherine Scanlon (Drexel Hill, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara), who scored 12 points, 10 of them at the foul line where she was 10-for 12.
Sophomore Shirley McCall (Collinsville, Va./Bassett) led JMU with 18 points. Sophomore Lesley Dickinson (Queens Village, N.Y./Christ the King) was the only other Duke in double figures with 13. Sophomore Meredith Alexis (Hanover Township, Pa./Bishop Hoban) was JMU's leading rebounder with 10.
