HARRISONBURG, Va., November 18, 2005 --Â Four players scored in double figures as the James Madison (1-0) women's basketball team opened the 2005 season with an impressive 69-57 win over Richmond (1-2).
JMU opened up a first half lead of 14 points with a little over a minute left. In the second half Richmond was able to cut down the lead to five points on four different occasions, the last time at 55-50 with 5:38 left in regulation.
Junior Meredith Alexis (Hanover Township, Pa./Bishop Hoban) and sophomore Tamera Young (Wilmington, N.C./Laney)had double doubles in the win. Alexis finished the game with 19 points, one below her career high, and 12 boards. Alexis also had two blocked shots and was 7-for-8 from the field in the first half. Young ended the day with 13 points and 12 boards along with six assists.
Other JMU scorers included junior Lesley Dickinson (Queens Village, N.Y./Christ the King) with 12 points and seven boards while junior Shirley McCall (Collinsville, Va./Bassett) chipped in another 12 points and four assists.
Senior Saona Chapman (Voluntown, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) led the Spiders with 14 points and eight assists while junior Christina Campion (Hamilton Square, N.J./Peddie School) added another 11 points and four rebounds.
JMU will be back in action on Sunday, November 20 at Virginia Tech. Tip-off time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
