FIVE-RUN FIFTH INNING GIVES SOFTBALL DUKES SWEEP OVER UNCW

The Dukes extended their school-record winning streak to 15 games and improved their record to 34-14 overall (14-3 CAA). The Seahawks fell to 19-32 (9-9 CAA).
UNCW plated its first run when Carley Hughes reached on an error by the second baseman and Brittany Wilkins scored from third. Paige Wakefield added another run for the Seahawks by drawing a bases-loaded walk before the Dukes turned a double play to end the inning.
The score remained 2-0 in favor of the Seahawks through the second and third innings before Dominguez sent her sixth homer of the season over the left-center field fence to cut the lead to one.
JMU took the lead with a five-run fifth inning started by Brittney Lyddane (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) drawing a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at two. Dominguez followed her with an RBI single through the right side as the first batter after UNCW pitcher Jess Luckett was relieved by Brittney Lehrschall. Courtney Simons (Richmond, Va./Deep Run) sent a single down the right-field line that plated two more runs for the Dukes. Lauren Mernin (Herndon, Va./Herndon) added the fifth run of the inning with a pinch-hit RBI single to left field that gave the Dukes a 6-2 advantage.
The Seahawks threatened again in the seventh. Wakefield hit a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Krista Searle from third and Stephanie Edwards hit an RBI double to left-center to cut the lead to two. Jenny Clohan (Ashburn, Va./Broad Run) forced the next batter to ground out to third base and end the game with a 6-4 win for JMU.
Starting pitcher Branden Moss (Richmond, Va./Trinity Episcopal) did not get a decision going three innings and giving up two runs on five hits.
Clohan got the win (13) for JMU pitching the final four innings and giving up two unearned runs on six hits while striking out two.
JMU concludes the regular season with a conference home series against Towson on Saturday, May 5 and Sunday, May 6. The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday that is scheduled to begin at 2 pm and a single game on Sunday at noon.
