ELON, N.C., February 24, 2008 ? The JMU women's softball team was named champions of the Elon Phoenix Invitational Sunday after the championship game was called due to rain.
Earlier in the day Madison capitalized on four Binghamton errors on its way to picking up a 15-1 win. The win gave the Dukes the top seed heading into the championship round, but the final game was never played.
The Bearcats committed a pair of costly errors in the top of the fourth inning, allowing three unearned Madison runs to score. Freshman designated player Katie Spitzer led of the inning with a walk and sacrificed to second by Kaitlyn Wernsing but a wild throw allowed Wernsing to reach base as well. Junior outfielder Megan Forbes pinch ran for Spitzer and stole third base. She would score on an error by shortstop.
Junior right fielder Shannon Moxey made the Bearcats pay for their errors, lacing a two-run double to left center field. Moxey finished the day one-for-four, with three RBIs, a run scored and a walk.
The three-run lead was more than enough for starter Jenny Clohan who picked up her second complete-game win of the season. Clohan allowed just four runners to reach base all game, giving up one hit, one walk and hitting two batters. She gave up one run and struck out seven against Binghamton.
JMU received solid days at the plate from senior first baseman Jenn Chavez, who went two-for-five with a triple and two RBIs and junior catcher Julia Do
