SOFTBALL OPENS SAN DIEGO CLASSIC 1-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 29, 2008 -- The JMU softball (6-3) team kicked off the San Diego Classic Friday by splitting a pair of games. The Dukes defeated Eastern Michigan 6-1 in the first game of the day but fell to No. 7 (USA Today/NFCA) UCLA 8-0 in five innings in the second game.
UCLA got five shutout innings from reigning NCAA Player of the Week Anjelica Selden on their way to improving to 15-2 this season. Selden struck out 14 of the 16 Madison players she faced, including striking out the side in the second through fifth innings.
Sophomore leftfielder Shannon Moxey was the only JMU player to reach base against Selden, leading of the game with a single.
Junior right-hander Jenny Clohan went 3.1 innings, giving up seven runs, two of which were earned, seven hits and striking out four. She fell to 2-1 this season with the loss.
JMU committed five errors in the game, leading to six unearned runs by UCLA.
Bruins leftfielder Krista Colburn went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI and second baseman Amanda Kamekona went 2-for-3 two RBIs and two runs scored.
In the first game of the Day, junior right-hander Meredith Felts picked up the complete-game win, giving up four hits, one unearned run and striking out five. She improved to 3-2 this season.
Felts pitched her way out of a couple of jams, including the bottom of the third when the Dukes loaded the bases with a pair of errors surrounding an Eagles single. The Greenville, N.C., native enduced a fly out to short left field before ending the inning with a line out to third baseman Amber Kirk.
In the second inning, the Eagles got runners of the corners with one out but Felts got EMU second baseman to pop out to freshman shortstop Melissa Hill, who through out catcher Heather Han at the plate.
Senior first baseman Jenn Chavez went 2-for-4 with a triple. She had two RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Dukes at the plate.
Moxey hit her fifth double and picked up her seventh RBI of the year. She leads Madison in both categories.
JMU will be back in action Saturday against CSU Bakersfield at 2:30 EST.
