SOFTBALL DEFEATS CSU Bakersfield 6-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 1, 2008 -- The JMU softball team defeated CSU Bakersfield 6-2 Saturday in the San Diego Classic. The Dukes improved to 7-3 this season with the win.
Junior catcher Julia Dominguez laced a two-run, bases-loaded single to left field in the bottom of the third to give JMU the lead for good. Madison would tack on two more runs in the inning on illegal pitches by the Roadrunners.
Dominguez finished the day 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Junior left-hander Shannon Outman went four innings, giving up just two runs to pick up the win. She is 2-0 on the season. The south paw scattered six hits and walked two.
Junior RHP Jenny Clohan relieved Outman in the fifth, pitching the final three innings. She shut down the Roadrunners allowing just one walk and no hits to pick up her first save of the season.
CSUB jumped out to an early lead when three of their first four hitters reached base. Designated player Brooklyn Stewart capped off the inning with a two-run single with one out.
Madison responded in the bottom of the inning with Clohan's RBI single that plated sophomore left fielder Shannon Moxey. Clohan was two-for-two with a run scored and RBI. Moxey finished the day two-for-four with a run scored.
JMU's final run came when junior third baseman Amber Kirk hit an RBI single to left field with runners on first and second in the bottom of the fourth.
CSUB threatened on last time in the bottom of the fifth inning when Outman walked the first two batters of the inning. Clohan came in and forced to ground outs before ending the inning with a flyout to center field.
