SOFTBALL DROPS TWO ON SUNDAY

SAN DIEGO, Calif., March 2, 2008 ? The JMU softball team lost a pair of games to close out the San Diego Classic Sunday. The Dukes dropped an error-filled game to Oregon 7-2 in the early game before losing a pitcher's duel 3-0 in nine innings to No. 22 (ESPN) Fresno State.
Against the Bulldogs, junior right-hander Meredith Felts took the tough-luck loss after pitching 8.1 scoreless innings. The Dukes committed two errors in the top of the ninth, leading to three Fresno runs. First baseman Nicole Angene drove in the go-ahead runs with a two RBI double to right center.
Felts finished the game allowing four hits, two unearned runs, walked one and struck out six. Junior RHP Jenny Clohan pitched the final 0.2 innings, gave up two hits, one earned run, and struck out two.
At the plate junior shortstop Amber Kirk went 2-for-4 with two singles for the Dukes.
Madison is now 7-5 on the season and wrapped up their West Coast trip with a 2-3 record.
In the first game of the day, JMU committed six errors and gave up three unearned runs.
The Ducks capitalized on three first inning errors to take a 4-0 lead after one inning of play. The lead was enough for Oregon pitcher Melissa Rice, who picked up the complete-game win.
Madison broke up the shutout with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, when junior outfielder Megan Forbes stole third and scored on an errant through by Oregon. Sophomore centerfielder Courtney Simons advanced to third on the play. She scored on an error by UO second baseman Courtney Kivett.
Clohan fell to 2-2 with the loss. She went three innings, gave up
