PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga., April 19, 2009 ? The James Madison women's golf team fired a final-round 292 to finish in third in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships held at the Calloway Resort in Pine Mountain, Ga.
The Dukes carded rounds of 319 and 294 in the first two rounds to finish with a 905, 20 strokes ahead of fourth-place Richmond.
Leading the way for Madison were sophomores Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) and Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park), who were each named to the All-Tournament Team after tying for fifth. Lynch carded a team-season-low 69 in the final round to finish with an 82-74-69=225. Mesa stayed even with Lynch after shooting a 75-75-75=225.
Freshman Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio La Montana) was the third Duke to finish in the top 10 after tying for ninth with an 80-72-74=226. Sophomore Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) and freshman Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) rounded out the JMU five-player team in a tie for 20th. Gunnarsson carded a 82-85-74=241 while Sakamoto fired an 84-73-78=235.
UNC Wilmington's Carmen Perez-Narbon was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player after winning the tournament with a 73-72-74=219. Joining Perez-Narbon, Mesa and Lynch on the All Tournament Team were UNCW's Ashley Tait (75-74-71=220), Georgia State's Sandra Maier (77-71-73=221) and Anna Scott (74-77-71=222), William and Mary's Sarah Whitney (76-71-78=225) and Richmond' Jillian Fraccola (77-75-73=225).
Georgia State (304-296-290=890) edged UNCW (300-297-294=891) by one shot for the team championship. JMU finished third, followed by Richmond (310-306-309=925) and William & Mary (315-307-306=928).
