GREENSBORO, N.C., Sept. 29, 2009 -- The James Madison women's golf team carded a 310 in Tuesday's final round to finish fifth at the UNCG Starmount Fall Classic, held this week at the Starmount Country Club in Greensboro, N.C. The Dukes shot 300 and 307 in the tournament's first two rounds to finish at 917.
Junior Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) was Madison's top individual finisher, tying for seventh at the event. Mesa set a new career-low for a 54-hole event after carding a 73-77-74=224. Her previous mark was a 225, recorded at last year's CAA Championships. Mesa also tied her career-low for an 18-hole round with Sunday's 73.
The junior's participated in the tournament as an individual, meaning her score did not count toward the Dukes' team score.
Sophomore Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Haw./Kalani) was the team's top finisher, finishing ninth out of a field of 65. Sakamoto carded a 75-74-76=225.
Juniors Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeryd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) and Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) tied for 17th after each carded an identical 74-76-79=229. Both set new season-lows for both an 18-hole round (74) and a 54-hole event (229).
Sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio la Montaña) tied for 28th, while junior Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) rounded out the JMU five-player team in 39th. Sanmiguel shot a 77-81-76=234 while Lynch carded 79-81-80=240.
Campbell carded a tournament-record 296-289-302=887 to beat out the field of 10 for the team championship. UNC Greensboro shot a 298-292-304=894 to tie the record they set last year but were relegated to second behind the Camels. UNC Wilmington (303-302-303=908) finished third, followed by North Carolina State (303-305-308=916) and JMU.
Cambell swept the top three spots in the individual portion of the tournament with Mary Mattson taking first, followed by Teresa Arocena in second and Belen Diaz Cisneros tying for third with Wilmington's Ashley Tait. Mattson carded a 71-69-78=218 to claim a three-shot victory over Arocena (74-75-72=221). Cisneros (75-77-70=222) and Tait (73-72-77=222) were one shot back of Arocena. Greensboro's Annelie Weimenhog (72-74-77=223) and Erica Creed (78-69-76=223) rounded out the top five in a tie for fifth.
JMU will be back in action this weekend, Oct. 4-5, in the Eat-A-Peach Mercer Invitational in Macon, Ga.
