RICHMOND, Va., Oct. 8, 2010 - Senior Amy Daniel (Mountain Top, Pa./Crestwood) scored on a penalty corner with four minutes remaining in the second half to force overtime, but James Madison field hockey ultimately fell 4-3 to Colonial Athletic Association-rival Virginia Commonwealth at Cary Street Field in Richmond, Va. on Friday evening.
The Dukes lost their second straight game, each by one goal, to fall to 7-7 overall and 3-2 in the CAA. VCU improved to 9-4 and 4-1 in conference play.
Daniel finished the game with two goals, giving her a CAA-best 16 goals and 39 points in 2010. Sophomore Auburn Weisensale (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) added her fifth goal of the season while junior Lindsay Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) added two assists. Senior Dolores de Rooij (Vlaardingen, The Netherlands/Erasmiaans) chipped in with her third assists of the year.
Freshman goalkeeper Stephanie Tarafas (Suffolk, Va./Nanesmond River) appeared in her first career game, relieving starter Margo Savage (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) in the second half. The rookie made three saves, but took to the loss to fall to 0-1. Savage made one save in the first 35 minutes.
Kelsey Scherrer had two goals and an assist for the Rams, including the game-winner 6:54 into overtime. Twins Marle and Flore van Dressel each scored a goal while Stephanie DeMasi chipped in with two assists.
Erin Jablonski went the distance for VCU to pick up the win and improve to 8-4. She made five saves.
The Dukes held a 14-12 advantage in shots and a 9-3 lead in penalty corners. JMU outshot the Rams 8-3 in the second half and had six of the seven penalty corner.
VCU jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 1:41 into the first half. Scherrer pounced on a Madison turnover and converted it into an unassisted goal. Six minutes later, Marle van Dressel made it 2-0 with a blast off a penalty corner.
Daniel cut into the lead seven minutes later, converting on a JMU penalty corner. Cutchins picked up the assist on the play after inserting the ball to the Mountain Top, Pa. native.
