JACKSONVILLE, Fla., March 9, 2010 - The James Madison women's golf team shot a final round 307, giving the Dukes a 54-hole score of 930 and a 12th-place finish in the JMU/Eagle Landing Invitational. The 17-team event was held at the par-72, 6,282-yard Eagle Landing Country Club at Oakley Plantation in Jacksonville, Fla.
Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) put together the most consistent showing for JMU, carding a 76-75-75=226 to finish tied for 11th. It was Chamberlain's third consecutive top-15 performance and the ninth of her career.
Sophomore Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) recorded Madison's top individual round, shooting a 1-over-par 73 on Tuesday. Sakamoto never recovered from an 82 in Sunday's first round, however, and finished tied for 32nd after shooting a 231.
Sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio gl Montana) and junior Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) finished tied for 61st and 74th respectively. Sanmiguel carded an 81-78-78=237, while Mesa had an up-and-down showing finishing with an 83-78-81=242. Junior Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeyrd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnasiet) rounded out JMU's five-player team in a tie for 85th.
Junior Kelly Lynch (Severna Park, Md./Severna Park) participated in the event as an individual, finishing tied for 93rd after shooting an 87-86-82=255.
South Florida came from three strokes back to claim the team championship. The Bulls recorded rounds of 303-296-299=898 to claim their first team championship of 2010. Illinois carded a 302 to move into second place, six strokes back of USF. Central Arkansas (299-297-310=906), the tournament's leader after each of the first two days, finished third, followed by Kennesaw State (304-307-296=907) in fourth. East Carolina (311-303-301=915) and Stetson (305-304-306=915) rounded out the top five in a tie for fifth.
Hailey Koschmann was the only player to finish the tournament in the red, shooting a 2-under-par to claim the individual title. Koschmann led after all three days, finishing the tournament with a 69-70-75=214. Last year's champion, Emma de Groot of Chattanooga, finished second with a 74-70-73=217. East Carolina's Abby Bools (72-75-73=220) finished third, Shana Yang of South Florida (73-72-76=221) took fourth and Alexandria Buelow of Stetson and Rachael Edwa
