HOT SPRINGS, Va., April 18, 2010 - Three James Madison golfers finished in the top six overall to lead the Dukes to a second-place finish at the 2010 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championships at The Homestead Old Course in Hot Springs, Va. on Sunday. The Dukes completed the three-day event with a score of 932.
Georgia State won its third title since joining the CAA in 2006, finishing with a score of 923.
Sophomore Nicole Sakamoto (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kalani) and junior Catrin Gunnarsson (Bankeyrd, Sweden/Sanda Gymnsiet) were each named to the all-tournament team after finishing second and tied for fourth, respectively. They were joined on the team by tournament champion and Most Outstanding Player Charlotte Lorentzen, UNC Wilmington's Carmen Perez-Narbon and William and Mary's Morgan Stepanek.
Sakamoto, a first-team All-CAA selection, carded a 74-76-77=227 to record her sixth career top-10 finish and her fourth top-five of the season. Gunnarsson finished two strokes back of her teammate with a 76-74-79=229.
Junior Mary Chamberlain (Dennis, Mass./Suffield Academy) was the Dukes' third player in the top 10, finishing sixth with a 78-80-74=232. Classmate Laura Mesa (Manizales, Colombia/Colegio Granadino) carded an 81-85-78=244 to tie for 21st. Sophomore Valentina Sanmiguel (Bogota, Colombia/Gimasio la Montaña) rounded out the five-player team in a tie for 32nd.
Lorentzen was the only golfer to break par in the 54-hole event, shooting a 69 on Sunday to finish 10 strokes ahead of Sakamoto. Perez-Narbon took third and Gunnarsson and Stepanek tied for fourth.
UNCW (307-318-315=940) finished third behind GSU and JMU. W&M (322-323-306=951) took fourth and Xavier (316-330-308=954) fifth while Richmond (323-325-320=968), Old Dominion (319-344-326=989), Dayton (342-338-326=1006), Towson (341-347-343=1031) and Hofstra (345-369-334=1048) rounded out the 10-team field.
