CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., Sept 17, 2011 -- James Madison field hockey made all five of its stroke attempts to battle Richmond to a 2-1 penalty stroke victory on a neutral field in Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday.
JMU won its second straight overtime game to improve to 3-3 on the season. Richmond lost for the first time since Sept. 3 to drop to 3-3 as well.
Senior goalkeeper Margo Savage (Virginia Beach, Va./Princess Anne) limited the Spiders to just one goal in 100 minutes while making eight saves to improve to 2-2. She lowered her goals against average to 1.73.
Anna Zarkoski made two saves and allowed one goal for UR to drop to 2-3 this season.
Senior back Lindsay Cutchins (Suffolk, Va./Lakeland) recorded her first goal of the year and the 11th of her career to lead Madison offensively. She tied for the team lead with two shots with redshirt sophomore forward Courtney Versfeld (Bulawayo, Zimbabwe/Dominican Convent). Freshman midfielder Dana Allaband (Elkton, MD./Rising Sun) recorded her first career point with an assist on Cutchins' goal.
Richmond's Katelin Peterson scored her team-leading third goal of the season to lead the Spiders. She finished with five shots, including two on goal while Rebecca Barry collected a game-high six shots with three reaching goal.
The Dukes started the day's scoring with a penalty corner goal in the game's 24th minute. Allaband set up Cutchins who drove a shot past Zarkoski for JMU's second goal off a penalty corner this season.
Peterson tied the score in the game's 51st minute. She faked out Savage and knocked a diving shot into the upper right-hand corner.
The game remained tied through two overtimes forcing JMU's first penalty stroke match since defeating American 3-2 on Sept. 20, 2009. Madison shooters Cutchins, Allaband, junior midfielder Jenna Taylor (Midlothian, Va./James River), sophomore back Amy Goldstein (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) and junior midfielder Auburn Weisensale (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) converted on each of their attempts while Chelsea Davies had the Spiders' lone miss to seal the win for the Dukes.
Next up for JMU is its Colonial Athletic Association opener as it plays host to Drexel at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Friday, Sept. 23.
