ATLANTA, Jan. 8, 2012 -- James Madison won its fourth straight game Sunday afternoon as the Dukes beat Georgia State 62-50 in Colonial Athletic Association women's basketball at the GSU Sports Arena.
The Dukes, who held an opponent to 50 or fewer points for the fourth game in a row, improved to 11-3 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Georgia State dropped to 6-8 overall and 0-3 in the CAA with its second straight loss.
JMU never trailed in the game and led by as many as 16, 28-12, with 5:08 left in the first half. The Dukes were up 34-25 at intermission and extended their lead to as many as 20 on two occasions in the second half (the last time 60-40 at 5:22).
Three Dukes finished in double figures, led by 14 points by redshirt junior guard Jasmine Gill (Greensboro, N.C./Page). Sophomore guard Kirby Burkholder (Bridgewater, Va./Turner Ashby) added 13 on 4-for-6 shooting from the field and 3-for-4 shooting at the foul line, and junior guard Tarik Hislop (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch) added 12 points.
JMU redshirt senior forward Lauren Whitehurst (Chesapeake, Va./Indian River) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, Gill had eight rebounds, and junior forward Nikki Newman (Harrisonburg, Va./Turner Ashby) finished with seven rebounds.
Georgia State was led by Miranda Smith with 10 points.
