Cross Country Earns Sixth Place at NCAA Southeast Regional Meet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Led by a 14th-place finish by senior Katie Harman (Clarksville, Md./River Hill), the James Madison cross country squad earned a sixth-place team finish at the 2012 NCAA Southeast Regional meet on Friday afternoon.

Going into the event, the Dukes were ranked eighth in the region by the latest U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches' Association poll. The 6,000-meter women's run was completed by 255 runners representing 37 universities.

Harman clocked a time of 20:59.8 on the course that wove through McAlpine Creek Park in Charlotte, N.C. Fellow senior Katie Gorman (Lafayette Hill, Pa./Plymouth-Whitemarsh) finished the course in 27th place with a 21:22.45 time, and senior Stacey Nobles (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) followed her twenty seconds later in 44th place.

In her first collegiate appearance at a regional meet, freshman Jenna Flickinger (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) turned in a 64th-place finish with a time of 21:58.72. Sophomore Kristen Landry (Boonton Township, N.J./Mountain Lakes) tallied the last score for JMU with an 82nd-place finish in 22:11.89.

Senior Annie Reiner (Virginia Beach, Va./Ocean Lakes) crossed the line in 22:28.36 to take 102nd place in her final appearance in a NCAA Southeast Regional meet. Sophomore Rachel Hagen (Sterling, Va./Potomac Falls) rounded out the Dukes lineup with a 144th-place finish in 22:57.09.

As a team, JMU scored 225 points on the day to earn sixth place at the meet. Duke won the women's race with 81 points to advance to the NCAA Championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 17. William & Mary, the 2012 Colonial Athletic Association champion, placed second on the day with 123 team points and will also compete for the national title in Louisville, Ky., next weekend.

The top two teams of the meet were ranked No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, in the latest USTFCCCA poll. Duke is also ranked 10th in the latest national polls.

The winner of the race, Cally Macumber (Kentucky), will advance to the national meet as an individual after her 20:10.98 performance on Friday. She will be joined by teammate Chelsea Oswald, Virginia's Catherine White and North Carolina's Lianne Farber as the other top-finishers not members of the top two teams from the southeast.

Madison will send runners to the Eastern College Athletic Conference cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 17. Held in Van Cortlandt Park in New York, N.Y., the women's race is set for a 12:58 p.m. start.
