JMU Shuts Out No. 18 Northeastern 3-0 in CAA Semifinals

DEDHAM, Mass. – Fourth-seeded James Madison field hockey shut out top-seeded No. 18 Northeastern 3-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association semifinals to advance to the finals on Sunday, Nov. 9 at Dedham Field. The Dukes will face either second-seeded Delaware or third-seeded William and Mary. The win marked Head Coach Christy Morgan's 150th career victory.
JMU improved to 12-7 this season while Northeastern dropped to 14-5. Senior goalkeeper Hannah George (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) recorded her second shutout of the year and ninth win of the season (9-6) after making six saves. Becky Garner took the loss (14-5), allowing three goals and making five saves.
The Dukes earned a corner in the 33rd minute of play to set up their first-half scoring. After junior midfielder Adrienne le Vatte (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Alexander Road) pushed the ball in to senior back Dana Allaband (Elkton, Md./Rising Sun), the ball was passed off to junior back Loes Stijntjes (Steenokkerzeel, Belgium/Heilig Hartcollege). Stijntjes powered the shot in from the top of circle to redshirt-junior midfielder Taylor West (Princess Anne, Md./Pocomoke), who finished the play to give JMU a 1-0 lead with 2:25 remaining in the first half.
West gave the Dukes a 2-0 lead with 30:46 to play, picking up a rebound off a blocked shot. Her two goals on the day moved her into a tie for ninth on JMU's all-time career points list (94) and 10th on the all-time career goals list (39).
Junior forward Danni Wilson (Port Elizabeth, South Africa/Collegiate) rounded out the scoring on the day when she made it a 3-0 lead for JMU, picking up a pass from Allaband and powering it by the goalkeeper with 19:13 left in the game. With her assist, Allaband moved into a tie for sixth on the JMU all-time assists list (29).
JMU outshot Northeastern 16-9, including an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Dukes also edged the Huskies in penalty corners 7-6.
The Dukes advance to the CAA finals for the first time since 2008 when they won the CAA Championship with a 1-0 victory over Old Dominion. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Dedham Field.
