No. 18 JMU Nipped in Overtime by No. 4 Duke, 2-1
10/18/2015 4:44:00 PM | Field Hockey
HARRISONBURG, Va. – After No. 18 James Madison field hockey scored the equalizer in the 67th minute, No. 4 Duke (11-4, 2-3 ACC) was able to tally the game-winning goal just 40 seconds into overtime and snap the Dukes' five-game win streak (11-4, 4-0 CAA).
With just over three minutes remaining in regulation, JMU pulled sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler from the cage to give the Dukes an extra offensive player on the field. After being down 1-0 since the 17:02 mark, they quickly took the ball down field to the attacking zone where redshirt senior Taylor West fired hard at the Blue Devils' keeper. The shot rebounded into crowd of players, and sophomore Melanie Kusakavitch was able to send the ball over the line to tie the game at 1-all.
After the score, Kraeutler stepped back into the cage and the JMU defense was able to hold off Duke to send the game to overtime. The Blue Devils were able to gain possession of the ball and raced to the attacking zone, where a high flick by Alexa Mackintire looped over Kraeutler and into the net for the golden goal.
JMU held the advantage in shots 16-7, including a 12-6 mark in shots on goal that forced Duke goalkeeper Lauren Blazing to make 10 saves on the afternoon. A contributing factor was the Dukes' eight corners compared to the Blue Devils' two.
The Dukes head to William and Mary on Friday, Oct. 23 for their final regular-season road match of the season.
QUOTING COACH MORGAN
"Our intention was to come in and dominate, and I think during moments of the game, we absolutely did that. Am I excited that we competed against them and almost won? Yes, I am, but I'm also disappointed that we didn't do it. I don't want to be the team that just competes against the best, I want to be the best team. And we're working towards that – this is such a great team with great character and great work ethic, and I think the sky's the limit."
