HARRISONBURG, Va. – A pair of second-half goals proved the difference in No. 17 James Madison field hockey's 2-0 loss to No. 7 Virginia at the JMU Field Hockey Complex on Friday night.
The Dukes (12-5, 5-0 CAA) outshot the Cavaliers (13-4, 3-3 ACC) 9-5 before a corner goal by Tara Vittese found the cage 1:11 into the second half. JMU continued its assault, finishing the game with a 19-13 advantage in shots, but UVa posted an insurance goal off a save rebound by Vittese in the 45th minute to secure the win.
Of JMU's 19 shots, 10 were on goal. Senior Loes Stijntjes posted three of her five shot attempts on goal, and senior Danni Wilson put two of her three shot attempts on goal.
For Virginia, 10 of their 13 shot attempts were on goal, forcing sophomore goalkeeper Sara Kraeutler to make six saves. Freshman Emma Drost earned a defensive save on a corner shot attempt, and sophomore Hannah Hall made a save when the Dukes pulled Kraeutler for an extra attacker on the field.
JMU wraps the regular season on Sunday, Nov. 1, with a noon contest against Hofstra. The winner of the game will earn the No. 1 seed for the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association tournament.
QUOTING COACH MORGAN
"The thing that is great about this opportunity is that we're hungry. We are a hungry team and we go into a conference game on Sunday unsatisfied. We're going to use [today's game] to our benefit."

CAA LANDSCAPE
Seeding for the CAA tournament, held Nov. 6-8 by the highest seed, will be determined on Sunday. If the Dukes defeat the Pride, JMU will earn the No. 1 seed and the right to host the tournament with a 6-0 record. If the Pride wins, both JMU and Hofstra will hold 5-1 league records. Tiebreaker rules revert to head-to-head results, which would make Hofstra the top seed for the tournament.
