SCOUTING THE HERD
- Marshall returns to Huntington for its first home game of the season on Friday evening after going on the road for each of its first two contests in 2015-16.
- The Herd did not open their season until Thursday, Nov. 19, when they traveled to Knoxville, Tenn., to face Tennessee. After dropping an 84-74 decision to the Volunteers, Marshall fell at Morehead State on Tuesday evening by an 85-61 margin.
- Junior guard Stevie Browning has led the way for Marshall so far, averaging 14 points per game through the first two contests, while senior forward James Kelly is averaging a double-double for the Herd, tallying 12 points and 10 boards per game.
SERIES HISTORY
- The Dukes and Herd have met just twice before in program history. The two teams played an identical home-and-home series during the 2010-11 season, splitting the two games with each squad winning on their home court.
- After falling in the first matchup, a 67-63 victory for the Herd in Huntington on Dec. 7, 2010, the teams met just two weeks later in the JMU Convocation Center on Dec. 22, The Dukes won that contst, 80-73.
- In that win, then-senior Denzel Bowles went 13-for-21 from the field en route to a 34-point, 13-rebound performance. The effort marked Bowles' 18th career double-double and fourth-ever 30-point game.
LAST TIME OUT
- Fueled by a career-high 27 points from redshirt junior forward Dimitrije Cabarkapa, James Madison earned a 106-74 victory over cross-town Eastern Mennonite in non-conference men's basketball action on Tuesday night at the JMU Convocation Center.
- Facing the Royals for the first time in 40 years, the Dukes moved to 3-3 on the strength of their first 100-point performance since putting up 110 at Seton Hall on Dec. 22, 2007 and first 100-point effort in regulation since a win over Siena on Nov. 9, 2007. It was also JMU's first win by more than 30 points since they defeated Towson, 99-68, during the 2011-12 season. EMU fell to 3-2 with the loss.
- With senior guard Ron Curry battling illness and playing only eight minutes, senior guard Winston Grays III and redshirt junior guard Devontae Morgan picked up the slack, tallying seven assists each. Morgan added five rebounds and a steal while Grays filled the stat sheet with two blocks and two steals.
