HARRISONBURG, Va. – Assistant Athletic Director for Ticketing and Customer Relations
Michael Carpenter on Tuesday announced the hiring of Michael Barry as James Madison's Director of Athletics Marketing.
Â
"We are very excited to have Michael Barry joining our staff as Director of Athletics Marketing," Carpenter said. "Michael will bring invaluable experience from a successful Big 12 football program and his energy and enthusiasm will be a great fit for JMU."
Â
Barry most recently served as assistant director of marketing at Baylor, concentrating on promoting the Bears' men's basketball, softball, soccer and football programs.
Â
"I first want to thank Director of Athletics Ian McCaw and Baylor University for an incredibly memorable five years," Barry said. "James Madison University is a historic institution rich in athletic tradition and success, and I could not be more honored to join AD
Jeff Bourne's talented team."Â
Â
At JMU, Barry will steer promotional efforts for all 18 sport programs while leading a marketing and promotions staff of five individuals. He will implement marketing plans aimed at driving attendance and maximizing the in-venue fan experience with specific emphasis on football and women's basketball.
Â
In his last four years in Waco, Barry created and implemented different marketing campaigns and ticket sales strategies for a number of varsity sports, including men's basketball, softball and soccer. He was part of a team that built new promotional objectives from scratch as Baylor football moved into McLane Stadium, a brand-new $280 million dollar stadium. He also created strategies to grow the Bears' footprint on all official athletics social media accounts and developed both season-long and single-game promotions that resulted in record attendance at football, softball and soccer.
Â
Barry spent his first year working for Baylor IMG Sports Marketing, where he was part of the media rights and corporate sponsorship operation on behalf of Baylor Athletics. He worked to acquire new clients and build relationships with current clients. Barry oversaw football on-field operations for IMG and worked with marketing staff to ensure fulfillment of promotional obligations.
Â
A 2010 graduate of Baylor, Barry earned his bachelor's degree in speech communications. He and his wife, Katie, reside in Harrisonburg.
