HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. – A late goal by junior Hannah Hall pushed James Madison field hockey (12-5) to a 2-1 win at Hofstra (9-9, 1-4 CAA) on Friday afternoon, securing the Dukes a berth in the upcoming Colonial Athletic Association tournament with a 4-2 league record.
Knotted 1-1 with under five minutes to play in regulation, the Dukes earned their third penalty corner of the year for a chance to run a set play. Junior McKenzie Ridgely took the shot, but Hofstra goalkeeper Lauren Saltus made the save. Hall, however, was ready for the rebound and lifted it over Saltus for the gamewinner.
The Dukes finished the day with a 16-11 advantage in shots, while the Pride held the 10-8 edge in shots-on-goal. JMU also led 3-2 in corner attempts.
JMU was first on the board on Friday with a tap-in by sophomore Ashley Gippe from a midfield pass by Ridgely just 5:15 into the game. Hofstra tied the game off a straight corner shot five minutes later.
The regular season comes to a close on Sunday, Oct. 30 with a trip to No. 8 Virginia. Action begins at 1 p.m.
