On Wednesday, November 8, the James Madison University Duke Club and the student-athlete leadership program hosted the department's sixth Student-Athlete Mentorship Event. The event's programming was designed to engage student-athletes and allow them to learn from and network with former JMU student-athletes. Over 50 student-athletes representing different sports at JMU met with 17 mentors, numbers which demonstrated the growth of the event.
The night started off with a panel discussion among three of the speakers, during which time they discussed things like post-graduation life, how to prepare for success in the workforce, and tips for networking and searching for jobs. Once the panel discussion had concluded, the Dukes came together in small groups with the guests to network and learn more about the professional world.
After the small group sessions had concluded, the group commemorated the event with a picture, with many student-athletes electing to stay longer to engage in discussion with the guests.
JMU Assistant AD for Student-Athlete Leadership
Meredith Crawford said, "It's so great to see how the Student-Athlete Mentorship event has evolved. This was our 6th event and to have former student-athletes and current student-athletes come together is amazing. The focus of the event is to learn to leverage being a student-athlete in the next phase of life. The alumni that give of their time to share their own experiences truly connect with the current athletes. We are truly grateful to the alumni who came to campus and know they made a great impact on the athletes."
