HARRISONBURG, Va. – On Sunday, Feb. 26, James Madison Athletics will once again celebrate National Girls & Women in Sports Day to encourage local girls to engage in physical activity, fostering teamwork and a healthy lifestyle. The event will be held in Sinclair Gymnasium at Godwin Hall from 2 to 4 p.m.
Â
This service event brings the Harrisonburg community together with JMU's female student-athletes to showcase the positive results sports can achieve. Members of the JMU women's soccer, field hockey, volleyball and track & field teams will be present to guide participants through various stations involving drills for their sports. Additionally, the girls will have a chance to hear from coaches and student-athletes about the impact sports have had on their lives.
Â
The event volunteers enjoy being role models and mentors to the girls who attend the event. At last year's event, softball student-athlete Ashley Samuels said, "I know when I was younger I looked up to a lot of the older people at summer camps I would go to, especially athletes at the college level. So I love the idea of maybe being a role model now, to these kids. Softball does a lot of stuff like this and it's always a pleasure being able to get out into the Harrisonburg community."
Â
Registration is now available, and the clinic is open to all girls ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade. The $10 registration fee covers admission to the clinic, a game ticket to women's basketball vs. William and Mary that day at 5 p.m. and a concessions voucher to use at the game. Girls who are registered by February 16 will also receive a free event t-shirt. Parents can register their children online at JMUTickets.com.
