ORLANDO, Fla. – Behind Megan Good's eighth shutout of the season, No. 12/13 James Madison (16-3) blanked Kansas 5-0 on Sunday inside ESPN Wide World of Sports to round out the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic with a 4-1 record.
Good faced a tough Jayhawk (12-9) lineup as Kansas knocked five singles to tie for the most hits given up by the junior this season. Good issued one walk while striking out six, stranding eight runners in the contest to improve to 11-0.
Seven of the nine Dukes in the starting batting order knocked hits against Kansas led by Taylor Newton who went 3-for-4 with a RBI. Good, Odicci Alexander and Niki Prince all tallied two hits in the contest as the Dukes tallied 13 total.
The Dukes got on the board early with a two-out RBI double from Newton in the bottom of the first gave JMU a 1-0 advantage. JMU loaded the bases in the bottom of the second with two before freshman Cambry Arnold beat out an infield slap hit to third base to earn a RBI.
JMU and Kansas traded back-to-back scoreless innings before Newton led off the bottom of the fifth with a single through the left side. Freshman Kierstin Roadcap drew a walk before Alexander singled up the middle to score a run. Prince added a second run of the inning with a single to left to push the JMU lead to 4-0.
Senior Tahli Moore led off the fifth with heads up base running to stretch a single into a double before scoring the final JMU run off a RBI single to left from Good.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"I don't know if we have figured it out or not, but our approach today was much better. Offensively, we were much better pitch-to-pitch and inning-by-inning. We just have to see if we are mature enough to do that every time out. We don't get to pick and choose the games we want to be great. Megan [Good] really battled today. She threw a lot of pitches, but she control their hitters very nicely."
THE STREAK CONTINUES
With her eighth consecutive shutout appearance, Good extends her scoreless streak to 53.2 consecutive innings. Over her 11 starts to open her junior campaign, Good has tossed eight shutouts while combining for two additional shutouts. She holds a 0.19 ERA over 72.0 innings and has struck out a total of 103 batters this season.
