For the James Madison field hockey team, community service is something all members take great pride in. The student-athletes on the team are committed to completing at least one hour of community service every week at a place of their choice, although many complete more hours. Such places include: the SPCA, Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center, Explore More Children's Museum in downtown Harrisonburg and Overcoming Barriers.
Community Service is important to them because it fits into their five team values of trust, integrity, respect, passion and discipline. They also feel grateful for every opportunity they have been given as student-athletes so they choose to give back.
Redshirt sophomore Megan Guzzardi expressed, "We want the community to know we appreciate them for always supporting us. The JMU love within the community is so powerful and the whole region bleeds purple. I am proud, honored and empowered to be a part of a community that supports me the way Harrisonburg does."
Guzzardi is personally committed to volunteering at Harrisonburg Health and Rehabilitation Center. Every Monday morning for one or two hours she plays bingo with the patients there. She added, "I love working with people, and it puts a smile on my face just to watch the patients play bingo every Monday morning."
Senior Sara Kraeutler volunteers at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham SPCA each week. She said, "It is important to be involved in the community because it allows us to give back. We are very fortunate to be able to have the wonderful support that we have, and participating in community service allows us to pay it forward."
The student-athletes of JMU field hockey definitely take after their coach, as she emphasizes the importance of community service. Coach Christy Morgan acknowledged that, "We feel so fortunate for what we have in life and all of the opportunities that are presented to us. We are a high-energy group that wants to make a difference in the world. We love supporting other and gain far more than we give. Doing community service connects us to each other and connects us to the people that we support, that's what it's all about!"
Coach Morgan wants the community to know that JMU field hockey is "a gritty team that's up to something bigger than the game."
