The victory secured JMU's first series sweep of the season as the Dukes improved to 34-6 overall with a 7-2 mark in league play. The Tiger stumbled to 13-20 and 2-6 in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Six Dukes tallied multiple hits as JMU tallied a program-record 20 hits against the Tigers. Senior infielder Niki Prince led the team after going 3-for-4 with two runs and four RBIs after slugging her first career grand slam. Freshman catcher Kierstin Roadcap also drove in four runs after knocking her second grand slam of the season.
Junior Megan Good earned the victory in the circle after tossing seven innings in the circle. The right-hander allowed two unearned runs off four hits while striking out seven to improve to 24-1. Sophomore Jackie Tremain pitched one inning of relief allowing three runs off four hits.
Keeping JMU off the board in first inning for the first time in the series, Towson struck in the home half of the inning. After back-to-back singles, a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Towson plated a run as the Dukes committed an infielder error to take the Tigers first lead of the series.
JMU answered in the top of the second as freshman designated player Odicci Alexander led off with an infielder single to short. Senior infielder Madyson Moran doubled to right field to move pinch runner junior Mimi Morris to third. Morris scored after an errant throw to first sailed into the outfield on freshman infielder Madison Naujokas' bunt attempt to lock the game up at 1-1.
Good retired eight consecutive batters before a triple and JMU error in the bottom of the fifth allowed an unearned run score to give Towson a 2-1 lead. Senior outfielder Taylor Newton answered by leading off the sixth with a solo home run to right center to lock the game back up at 2-2.
The Dukes retired seven straight Tigers to close regulation and force extra-innings for the first time over the season.
JMU led off the top of the eighth with a single from Good and a double from Newton to put two runners on with no outs. Moran delivered with an RBI single to left field while a Towson error allowed an insurance run to score to give JMU the 4-2 lead.
Following back-to-back singles from Prince and Naujokas to load the bases, Roadcap launched her second grand slam of the season to extend the lead to 8-2.
JMU loaded the bases once more with back-to-back singles from Tolle and freshman outfielder Cambry Arnold and a Towson error on Good's grounder to third. Three straight RBI singles from Newton, Alexander and Moran scored three runs to extend JMU's lead to 11-2. Prince became the 12th consecutive Duke to reach base in the inning as she rocketed her first career grand slam, the second of the eighth inning, to push the lead to 15-2.
Tremain pitched the bottom of the eighth in relief. The left-hander allowed three straight singles to load the bases with no outs before a two-out double plated three runs to cut JMU's lead to 15-5. Prince fielded a grounder to short to retire the side and preserve the extra-inning victory.
QUOTING COACH DEAN
"We need to figure out that in a three-game series hitter sometimes need to make adjustments. It's small adjustments. It's not always the same, and sometimes we try to treat every game the same. Every game is independent of itself. We did a nice job of staying with it today. A lot of people made plays that backed each other up."
